1937 Lincoln Zephyr “VooDoo Priest” - 2012 Goodguys Mother’s West Coast Custom of the Year award at the Goodguys 30th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, California. This incredible custom is from Metallica frontman James Hetfield and Hall of Fame custom car builder Rick Dore of Rick Dore Kustoms. Hetfield and Dore have designed several other award-winning builds, including a 1936 Auburn boat-tail speedster called “Slow Burn,” which took home the 2010 West Coast Custom of the Year award. For this build, Hetfield and Dore wanted to build a traditional custom that played on existing factory styling. The Zephyr features a custom-mixed paint job (Candy Apple Red over Raspberry paint) done by Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio in Concord, California. Keith Dean lowered the lid and did the “Coke bottled” rockers/running boards, as well as the molded 1938 Zephyr rear quarters and other custom work.

The car’s chrome plating, including the handmade lower body trim was done by Sherm’s Plating of Sacramento, California. “VooDoo Priest” features a modified stock chassis with a Mustang II front end, RideTech air bags and a 9-inch Ford rearend, according to Goodguys. H & H Flatheads rebuilt the car’s original Flathead V-12 engine and polished and plated it with Stromberg 97 carburetors.

Other features include a C4, Wheel Vintiques 16-inch artillery-style chrome wheels with hand-lettered Zephyr caps and Firestone 600-16 bias wide whites from Coker Tire.

The car interior was done in black mohair and vanilla white with candy red accents by Craig Hopkins. The interior also includes a 1941 steering wheel on a 1940 Ford column.

Tony Gomes at Tri-Valley Auto Glass of Pleasanton handled all the flat glass installation.
